Catherine Herrera Photography

I am the third of four generations of photographers in my family.

I fell in love with the medium with my first pin hole camera.  Before I could afford a camera, I used my fingers to frame shots and developed a deep appreciation for my cameras and the privilege to share stories through the visual medium of Photography.

I learned to embrace each assignment as a Treasure and each collaboration a Jewel.

Exhibits  of my photography feature series I've developed alongside my professional assignments, and reflect  on my life experiences and explorations.

Thank you to the many people who have been inspired to invite me to exhibit, share an artist talk, support my patreon to make possible  the often years long  focus on a theme, to the individuals who collect my photography and galleries, cultural centers and museums that share my photography to a broader audience.

Personal Projects

My personal photography maps the journey of my life during these times, and growth as a photographer.

While working as a photojournalist, I challenged myself to begin documenting my life and self in the ways I ask others to share their lives with me.

Today, my process involves research, writing and photography that document our times through the lens of an Indigenous person of mixed heritage including Latina and European American, often delving into questions about notions of home, identity and belonging, reflecting on ancestral connection to culture and the land. My photography has exhibited in museums, galleries and cultural centers.

In September 2023, selections from my series 'Landless Indian' will be exhibited in the Contemporary Indigenous Photography Exhibit,  'Landscapes of Survivance.'

I was selected as an UpNext Photographer with Diversify Photo in 2019.
