I worked for a time in the Bayview Hunter's Point doing outreach for Childhood Matters, a great parent call-in talk radio show produced in Oakland, CA. Their program is also produced in Spanish as Nuestros Ninos, hosted by the well-liked Dr. Marisol. www.nuestrosninos.com. In getting to know better the neighborhood and residents, I learned of the environmental challenges that scared the parents for their children's health.
When I was working on portrait photos of three Renassaince Entrepreneur Center graduates, I was sitting in a park on the bay, and captured these images. The Bayview neighborhood is currently going through a gentrification process as the city constructs new housing units at prices beyond the reach of most of the current Baview residents. The challenges the residents face include clean-up of a Super Fund site at the Naval Shipyard and at the PGE plant at the entrance of the community, located right on the San Francisco Bay. The plant has been scheduled for close down, but sometimes, I still see the stack emitting smoke.
I wonder how it is that nature can endure so much pollution, and remain so beautiful. This coming year, I am participating in a special event designed to bring celebration and prayer for the environment to various key natural landmarks in the neighborhood with the Ohlone community.
