Flor de Miel Films grew out of my love of story. After many years of working and learning as a photographer, I became aware of how much more of the story I wanted to share than the documentary and photojournalism I was paid to create for newspapers and individual clients, which at that point, were a secondary passion job to working in the courthouse.
In the evenings, on my way home, as the sun set near the courthouse in El Paso, Texas where I worked as a clerk, feeling quite far from my home city of Los Angeles and Hollywood, where ‘films’ were made.
I learned, films are made where there are important and vital stories to tell. My first short documentary traveled and won awards and air time on a local pbs affiliate. I learned the news when I was in Mexico City, by then, having applied for and being selected for a Fulbright in Mexico.
I would spend the next 20 years working as a professional artist and filmmaker, ranging from film festival curator to PBS producer, and seven years of my career were spent working in Mexico City as fixer, photojournalist and later, producer.
I struggled through much of that time, as a single mother and facing a real identity crisis after learning suddenly later in life that my family was Native American and not Mexican as I had thought for most of my life, my career as a filmmaker and storyteller would shift and change to include installations, photography exhibits and publications of my writing. Most recently, I am also invited to speak with screenings of my film, or apart from screenings. I am often asked to speak on art, film, and the themes of my films such as identity, belonging and ‘home’ in a global world.
I have produced and directed under the Flor de Miel Films/Media label the following:
‘Bridge Walkers’ Documentary (2015) with educational release (2016)
‘Open Doors’ Installation (2015)
WIP Open Doors (2012-14)
